Interstate 20 will once again be the focal point for road construction this weekend, but only if the weather cooperates, and that’s a big “if.” Here’s what you need to know about the chance of storms, potential weekend backups and events:
I-20 construction plans: "If the weather cooperates, continuing construction projects – one on the west side, one east side and two in downtown Atlanta – will again make I-20 travel problematic," said Georgia Department of Transportation spokesman David Spear."With a good chance of scattered thunderstorms all weekend, work may occur intermittently or be postponed completely."
On I-29 in Rockdale and Newton counties, two westbound lanes will be closed between Almon and Alcovy roads, beginning at 9 o’clock tonight and continuing through 5 a.m. Monday.
In Douglas County, two eastbound lanes will be closed nightly between Ga. 5 and Liberty roads, while downtown and into DeKalb County, re-striping will close three lanes nightly from Boulevard to Gresham Road. Also near downtown, emergency bridge repairs on the Westview Drive overpass will require double lane closures on I-20 in both directions between Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Langhorn Street Friday and Saturday nights. Rain chances pretty good: Channel 2 meteorologist Karen Minton said the chance of rain is 30 to 40 percent all weekend long. Highs will be in the upper 80s, with morning low around 70 degrees. Check the full weekend weather report and track changes.
Weekend events: Several festivals highlight the weekend calendar, including the Virginia-Highland Summerfest, which will be held today through Sunday.
Other festivals include the Mountain Park Beer Festival Saturday on Lakeshore Drive in Roswell and the Flying Colors Butterfly Festival Saturday and Sunday at the Chattahoochee Nature Center on Willio Road in Roswell.
Downtown, expect added traffic around Philips Arena for Saturday night's Atlanta Dream-Chicago basketball game. Full list of weekend events.
