A couple of construction projects were causing big delays on the top-end Perimeter and on I-75 in Cobb County Saturday morning, and traffic was only expected to get worse as motorists head into Atlanta for afternoon sporting events and festivals.

Road crews had one of the two exit lanes blocked heading from I-75 southbound to I-285 eastbound, causing a traffic jam that stretched nearly to Delk Road.

On I-285 eastbound, the state Department of Transportation had planned to close the three left lanes all weekend from Paces Ferry Road to Roswell Road.

Those roads and others headed into and around the downtown and Midtown areas will likely be more congested later in the day as sports fans head to Bobby Dodd Stadium for Georgia Tech’s 3:30 p.m. kickoff, to Turner Field for the 4:05 p.m. Braves game and to the Georgia Dome for Georgia State University’s 6 p.m. football game.

Midtown streets will also be jammed by motorists going to the Atlanta Arts Festival at Piedmont Park and the Atlanta Bar-B-Q Festival at Atlantic Station.

Of course, MARTA is always a good option for fans wanting to avoid the traffic jams. The computer problems that plagued MARTA’s Breeze Card machines in recent weeks have been resolved, so riders should be able to use debit and credit cards to pay for fares.
