Students at two schools in southeast DeKalb County are scheduled to return to their regular campuses Tuesday after they had to be relocated following a water main break Monday.

Work crews finished repairs Monday afternoon on a leak that forced the evacuation of Murphey Candler Elementary, with about 500 students, and Arabia Mountain Middle schools, with about 1,300 students, Channel 2 Action News reported.

The water main break occurred near Klondike Road and Browns Mill Road, according to a statement from DeKalb County.

The leak started around 5 a.m. and repairs began around 11 a.m., according to Channel 2.

School leaders said that by law, a building must be evacuated if it is without water for more than two hours..

DeKalb County spokesperson Burke Brennan said the pipe likely burst due to old age, Channel 2 reported.

“It doesn’t seem to be any evidence of any other digging in the area, so we think it’s age,” Brennan said.

Arabia Mountain High School freshmen and sophomores were taken to Lithonia High School, and juniors and seniors were taken to Miller Grove High School.

Murphey Candler Elementary School students were taken to Salem Middle School.
