Metro Atlanta will go from this week’s record-breaking bitter cold to tempertures in the 60s and a risk of spring-like severe thunderstorms and tornadoes by Saturday, forecasters said.
Wake-up temperatures Thursday were about 10 degrees warmer than on Wednesday, but were still in the mid- to upper 20s across most of metro Atlanta.
Readings at 6 a.m. Thursday ranged from 24 in Alpharetta, 25 in Dallas and 26 in Cartersville and Peachtree City to 29 in Chamblee and 30 at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.
Channel 2 meteorologist Karen Minton said there’s a 30 percent chance of late-day rain in metro Atlanta Thursday, along with afternoon highs around 40 degrees.
The 30 percent chance of rain will carry over through Friday, when morning lows in the upper 30s will be followed by highs in the upper 40s.
The chance of rain increases to 80 percent Saturday, when temperatures will climb to around 60 degrees after a morning low in the mid-40s.
The National Weather Service said early Thursday that strong to severe thunderstorms are possible across metro Atlanta, particularly between 4 and 10 a.m. Saturday. There’s also a potential for tornadoes and heavy rainfall, forecasters warned, adding that the risk will shift to south of metro Atlanta later in the day.
Sunday will be dry but a little cooler, with highs in the low 50s and lows in the mid-30s.
