The management of Allatoona Lake in Cherokee and Bartow counties has bad news for procrastinating campers: Many campsites are already full for the Memorial Day weekend.

All U.S. Army Corps of Engineers campsites at the McKinney, Old Highway 41 No. 3, Payne, Sweetwater, Upper Stamp, and Victoria campgrounds are booked, the Corps announced on its Facebook page. "With the weather forecast looking favorable, cancellations will be rare."

"Please remember that this is the busiest weekend on the lake, and parking will be minimal at beaches, shelters and ramps, especially on Sunday and Monday," the Corps said. "We suggest coming early and late on those days to better utilize the parking situation." Information: https://bit.ly/2WWL2wT

The Corps also suggested that people seeking campsites check availabilities elsewhere on the lake: Red Top Mountain State Park (a Georgia Department of Natural Resources facility); Bartow County Parks and Recreation (for Clark Creek North and South and Gatewood Park); and Allatoona Landing, a private campground.

Visitors also are reminded that all Corps-managed recreation areas at Allatoona Lake have gone “cashless.” Those using day use areas must have a credit or debit card to pay the recreation fee. Day passes and annual passes can be purchased at vending machines.
