Union head blasts decision on court employees

The head of Fulton County's employees' union wants the County Commission to reconsider making new workers hired by Superior and State courts and the Superior Court Clerk's Office unclassified. The board made the change in June at the request of Superior Court Chief Judge Cynthia Wright, State Court Chief Judge Patsy Porter and Clerk Tina Robinson. If unclassified workers get fired, they can't appeal to the personnel board to be reinstated.

Greg Fann, executive director of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees and a personnel board member, said the change also means workers who get promoted lose their classified status. That gives them little motivation to seek advancement, Fann said.
