Two police officers were injured Tuesday morning chasing a carjacking suspect in south Fulton County.
Union City police spokeswoman Gloria Hodgson told the AJC that the incident began with a credit card fraud call at the United Community Bank on Shannon Parkway.
As officers arrived, the suspect ran from the bank to an adjacent Walgreen store and carjacked a white minivan, according to Hodgson.
Police chased the minivan south on Roosevelt Highway into Palmetto, where a Union City officer and a Palmetto officer collided, injuring both officers, Hodgson said.
“Initial indication is that a Palmetto Police unit that was assisting made a U-turn in the roadway in an attempt to block traffic and was hit by the Union City vehicle,” Georgia State Patrol spokesman Gordy Wright said.
The suspect, identified as Rakim Jackson, 26, of Decatur, was taken into custody at a church near the wreck site.
Hodgson said no shots were fired during the incident.
Union City Master Patrol Officer Kevin Gilham was treated and released from Atlanta Medical Center, Channel 2 Action News reported.
The Palmetto officer, Cpl. Michael Upshur, remains hospitalized, Channel 2 said.
