The city of Tucker’s annual chili cook-off and Pi Day race are still set to happen this Saturday, officials said, as some other local events consider canceling over fears about the coronavirus.
The second annual "Pi Day Pie-K" — which falls on March 14 to celebrate the mathematical constant pi — is set to kick off Saturday morning, with heats starting at 8 a.m. and 10 a.m., the city said.
The 3.14-kilometer course (about 1.95 miles) starts and ends at the Tucker Recreation Center at 4898 Lavista Road. At the end of the course, participants will get pizza from Papa John’s and a voucher for free pie from Matthews Cafeteria.
“You can run, walk, skip, jump…whatever you have to do to make it to the finish line and there will be food waiting for you,” Crystal Dawson, Tucker’s recreation leader, said in a statement. The city estimated that the race had about 100 participants last year.
City spokesman Matt Holmes said that as of Wednesday, officials “have every expectation of this event taking place.”
Also on Saturday, the ninth annual Tucker Chili Cook-Off is expected to draw a crowd on Main Street from 12:30 to 5 p.m.
Holmes said the city has been in touch with the DeKalb County Board of Health to ensure the safety of attendees as worries about the spreading coronavirus grow.
Meanwhile, a DeKalb County town hall scheduled for tonight to discuss the coronavirus has become a “virtual” meeting. The CNN Center has suspended studio tours, and the Georgia Chamber of Commerce has postponed two upcoming conferences.
Savannah still plans to hold its large St. Patrick’s Day parade and celebration next week, and the NCAA men’s Final Four basketball tournament, scheduled for early April at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, will still go on with attendees, as of Tuesday.
