Powder Springs Planning and Zoning Commission members agreed Monday to table a vote on city tree law changes until their next meeting at 7:30 p.m. March 30 in the Council Chambers, Community Development building, 4488 Pineview Drive.

Commission member Nancy Farmer expressed concerns about staff recommendations to require residents to receive written permission and a city permit to cut tree branches on their property.

Tina Garver, the city’s interim Community Development director, said the new recommendations would “maintain the canopy instead of tree units.”

Also, tree diameters would need to be a minimum of 2 inches so that developers would not plant smaller trees, Garver said.

If these new guidelines are approved ultimately by the city council, Garver said the city could apply to be a Tree City USA.
