A person was airlifted to the hospital after being hit by a train Tuesday along Bankhead Highway in Douglas County.

The person, whose identity has not been released, was walking along the tracks about 4:30 p.m. and decided to cross over them before being struck by the train, Channel 2 Action News reported.

The accident occurred about 1,000 feet from the Temple Street crossing, officials said.

Authorities do not yet know why the victim was on the tracks.

The crash caused traffic delays near the site.

The train was traveling westbound from Linwood, N.C., to Sheffield, Ala., according to Norfolk Southern representatives. Only 23 of the train’s 83 cars were loaded.

The train was not derailed and no other injuries were reported.
