Q: How many news conferences did former President George W. Bush give during his eight years in office, and how many news conferences has President Barack Obama given since taking office, not counting State of the Union messages?

-- Rose C. Trujillo, College Park

A: Obama has had seven formal White House news conferences, including the May 27 news conference about the BP oil spill, according to a count by CBS News White House correspondent Mark Knoller. He includes a Feb. 9 surprise appearance in the briefing room in which Obama answered six questions. Knoller wrote in a story before the oil spill news conference that Obama has had 49 press availabilities. During the same period of time, Bush had 33 press availabilities (five were formal solo White House news conferences), Knoller wrote.
