Tuesday morning is the coldest morning of the season so far with widespread low to mid 20s in the metro and upper teens in the north Georgia mountains.
Temperatures finally rose above freezing across north Georgia around noon.
Our team of meteorologists tracked temperatures in the 20s in metro Atlanta and some teens in north Georgia on Channel 2 Action News This Morning.
Severe Weather Team 2 Meteorologist Karen Minton says children will need to bundle up as many schools across Georgia open up after the winter holiday.
"It's not going to warm up a huge amount for today so be prepared," Minton said.
Meteorologist Brian Monahan says there is much less wind today versus Monday but we have much colder temperatures.
Eleven mornings in November and December started in the 20s and 30s at Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson Airport. The coldest occurred on Dec. 19 when ATL dipped to 29 degrees.
As of 5:30 a.m., the temperature in Atlanta is 29 degrees, 28 in Calhoun and 19 in Blairsville.
The record low for January 4 is 3 degrees.
The widespread 20s will continue into Wednesday morning. Don't forget to take care of your pets and pipes when temperatures dip below freezing.
Minton says to expect a rapid warming by Thursday.
