DeKalb County deputies killed a pit bull after a teenager allegedly released his two dogs on them, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

Robert William Brown, 19, was wanted on charges of firing 18 shots from a handgun at his ex-girlfriend on Wednesday, missing her each time but striking a house, the sheriff’s office said. When deputies went to arrest him at his home on Ridgemire Court in Stone Mountain on Thursday, he released two pit bulls, one of which attacked a deputy and his K9 partner, the sheriff’s office said.

“The dog was shot during a restraint attempt and died on the scene,” sheriff’s spokeswoman Cynthia Williams said in the news release. “The shooting is under internal review.”

After his arrest, Brown was taken to the hospital for treatment of a minor head injury sustained while allegedly headbutting a window on a transport vehicle.

Brown, who is in the county jail without bond, is charged with aggravated assault and criminal damage to property, jail records show.
