Alpharetta has announced details of what organizers call the longest-running food festival in the South, the Taste of Alpharetta now in its 29th year.

More than 35,000 people are expected to attend the event, set for 5 to 10 p.m. Thursday, May 2, in downtown Alpharetta. More than 60 restaurants will participate, and live music and cooking demonstrations will be offered.

New this year will be a beer garden offering local brews, and a “locally grown” area “of local, food-focused, agricultural and educational organizations,” officials said. A culinary competition is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m., with an awards ceremony at 8:30 p.m.

Admission, parking and shuttle are free. Food and activity tickets will be sold for $5 per package of 10. Taste options will cost from one to eight tickets (50 cents to $4). Tickets also can be redeemed for children’s activities including face painting and inflatables.
