A reader hopes something can be done about a missing barrier.
“A fenced barrier to I-285 on Northern Avenue between North Decatur Road and Victoria Drive has been down for months. I have contacted my county commissioner, emailed GDOT three times, called GDOT and emailed Mr. Robert Brown, the DOT representative for the district. No action has been taken and I’ve received no response of any kind from GDOT,” wrote Rita Valenti.
Valenti said it seems it’s ok with them to ignore residents’ safety concerns.
“A stray animal or person could easily access I-285 with potentially disastrous results. Could someone please take responsibility and get this repaired?” Valenti said.
We sent her concerns to the DOT and let you know when we get a response.

Paul Erlandson wants something done about a faulty detention pond.
“The Abernathy Arts & Crafts facility has a detention pond that is not in compliance with detention pond regulations. They have also created an artificial stream that runs into the detention pond and ultimately behind the homes below the facility through an open drainage ditch. The open drainage ditch would not be to code if this was new construction but this community was built in the 1960s,” he wrote.
He said the artificial stream creates standing water throughout this route and will generate mosquitoes as the warmer weather arrives.
“The Abernathy Arts & Crafts center has allowed the detention to be overgrown with trees and plants as they feel this hides this detention pond. The overgrowth prevents the purpose of this detention pond and prevents its intended use. It needs to be cleaned out completely and relined with rip rap to prevent standing water,” he added.
In addition, Erlandson said there is a road that goes over the earthen dam that is part of this detention pond.
“There is a gate that needs to be painted and made functional again. It should have a lock on it to prevent unauthorized access to this road as the concrete is badly cracked and is not safe for driving on,” he said.
We sent the information to Fulton County and will let you know when it is resolved.
