The Suwanee City Council recently turned down a request for a zoning change to allow for a convenience store with gasoline pumps. The 2.2-acre site is at the southeast corner of the intersection of Scales Road and McGinnis Ferry Road at one of the entrances to Suwanee Station subdivision.

The request included for a 7,000-square-foot building would have included a 5,000-square-foot convenience store with beer and wine sales, a 2,000-square-foot restaurant, and gas pumps between the building and McGinnis Ferry Road.

The proposed site plan did not include sidewalks as required by city zoning, or landscape islands for trees required by the Buffer, Landscape and Preservation Ordinance.

The property owner, Jim Harris, in 2003 applied for rezoning and a special use permit for a landscaping business, which was also denied. In Nov of that same year, the property was rezoned for commercial use to allow for a shopping center, but the zoning prohibits vehicle and/or gasoline sales.
