Clean up was underway Wednesday at a Cobb County Waffle House after an SUV smashed through the front glass of the restaurant, officials said.

A man in his 60s and his wife had just eaten lunch at the restaurant, located at 2720 Sandy Plains Road in Marietta, police told Channel 2 Action News.

As they were leaving, the driver’s Honda Element SUV careened forward instead of backward out of the parking space.

Hannah Shlapak told the station she was meeting her mom at the Waffle House when she heard the car smashing through the glass.

“What the heck,” Shlapak said.

Shlapak said the driver seemed calm.

“I think he was mostly embarrassed which is understandable,” she said. “The workers were running around making sure everyone outside was okay.”

Tijana Eby and a co-worker had been trying to reach the Waffle House by phone to order lunch but got no answer, according to Channel 2.

“We were just trying to get lunch [for] about 20 minutes. [We] tried to call, no [one was] answering,” Eby said.

When Eby and her co-worker drove by the restaurant she said she couldn’t believe what had happened.

“I’m glad everybody is okay that’s the biggest thing,” Eby said.

A spokesperson for Waffle House told Channel 2 no one was seriously injured. They said they want to ensure the building is safe and are assessing the damage.

The spokesperson said they hope to have the Waffle House re-opened by Thursday.
