Suspect in theft of dead man’s Porsche arrested in New Mexico
In the end, it wasn’t a dead man’s 1988 red Porsche 944 that caused New Mexico authorities to detain a fugitive wanted for its theft.
Instead, it was one too many alcoholic beverages that led deputies from the Sandoval County Sheriff’s Office to arrest Robert Craig Sandman outside a Pueblo Indian gaming casino. He’ll be extradited back to Duluth — along with the Porsche — for questioning by police investigating the death of the car’s owner, Don Singer.
Additional charges may be pending, said Duluth police Capt. Mark Hunter, though it appears unlikely Sandman acted alone.
“There are additional people associated with elements of the case that may face charges,” Hunter said. “The investigation is ongoing in that regard.”
Sandman’s possible involvement is the strangest part of a strange case. He was charged in March 2012 with two counts of theft and aggravated stalking for an incident that occurred just down the street from Singer’ home in Montheath Pass. Sandman, 52, was convicted and sent to the Georgia state prison in Jackson in February and released March 22.
Singer, 57, was last seen alive March 23. Police have not yet said how he died.
This isn’t the first time Sandman has been locked up in New Mexico. According to the state’s Department of Corrections, he served nine years for second-degree murder during the 1990s.
