State wants Fulton to explain meeting violation

The state Attorney General’s Office wants Fulton County to explain why a quorum of commissioners met at a town hall meeting last month in an apparent violation of Georgia’s open meetings law. Reacting to an AJC article about the matter, Assistant Attorney General Kelly Campanella has asked interim Fulton County Attorney Larry Ramsey for a response by Monday. Ramsey previously said the law was technically broken, but not intentionally.

On Feb. 17, commissioners Emma Darnell, Bill Edwards, Joan Garner and Robb Pitts sat together at an event in west Atlanta to raise awareness about Republican bills introduced in the state Legislature, speaking to the crowd and to each other. While publicized through news releases, the event was not advertised as an official commission meeting, as required by law. Interim County Manager David Ware, formerly the county attorney, sat with them but did not avert a violation.
