A sinkhole sending muddy water rushing onto State Street was filled, and the road reopened Wednesday in northwest Atlanta.

It took crews about eight hours to empty the sinkhole after a water main broke about noon Tuesday causing the road to collapse just north of 14th Street, Lillian Govus, spokeswoman for the City of Atlanta Watershed Management, said.

Workers laid steel plates and barricades for pedestrians and plugged a pipe before crews reopened State Street at 1:15 a.m., Govus said.

About 35 houses and four fire hydrants were briefly affected by the break, but water service was restored before 6 p.m.

There was "no disruption in service to customers," an Atlanta Watershed tweet read.

The break “probably was due to the age of the pipe,” Govus said.
