The dam on Peachtree City’s Lake Peachtree will remain classified as a Category II structure following the city’s appeal of a June 2014 ruling that changed the classification to Category I. Mayor Vanessa Fleisch and several other Fayette County officials received a letter on Dec. 30 from Judson H. Turner, director of the Environmental Protection Division, stating that recent evaluation data “does not fully support the reclassification of the Lake Peachtree dam at this time.” The dam needs repairs, which were put on hold pending the classification ruling. Category I dams must be fortified to a higher standard to avoid “probable loss of life” in case of failure, but the city had only budgeted for repairs based on the less stringent Category II requirements.
