New General Mills facility coming

The Henry County Development Authority announced Dec. 21 that General Mills, manufacturer and marketer of branded consumer foods, will invest $8.5 million in its new state-of-the-art distribution facility on Westridge Parkway in McDonough.

The project will create more than 50 new jobs, according to officials connected with the project. The 408,000-square-foot site will distribute goods from Blue Buffalo Pet Products, a natural pet food brand which General Mills acquired earlier this year, throughout the Southeast.

City revises alcohol license fees

The fees for applying to sell alcoholic beverages in Peachtree City have been adjusted to reflect changes in state procedures.

The City Council voted 5-0 on Dec. 20 to reduce the new license application fee from $200 to $150 and to cut the change in license application fee (for new locations or licensees) from $150 to $100. But because the city is now being billed $40 by the state for each criminal background check provided by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and other law enforcement, the city is adding a $50 fee to cover that cost plus the additional city staff time required for processing.

The annual license fees paid by establishments will not change.

City annexes “islands” near Tyrone

Two “islands” of property on the border of Peachtree City and the town of Tyrone have been annexed into Peachtree City.

The City Council voted 5-0 on Dec. 20 to absorb the two parcels, totaling 42 acres, according to provisions of the Georgia Annexation Law, which applies to unincorporated property that is completely surrounded by one or more municipalities. In this case, most of the property was bordered by Peachtree City. The Fayette County Board of Commissioners agreed on Dec. 13 not to object to the annexation.

The council also voted to rezone the property from agricultural-residential to limited-use residential, which would permit future development into a maximum of 83 single-family lots.
