All Smyrna employees must abide by a revised social media policy passed 6-0 April 16 by the Smyrna City Council.

The nine-page, single-spaced policy covers all social media sites, including “social networking sites, microblogging sites, photo and video sharing sites, wikis, blogs, forums and news sites.”

During a pre-council meeting on April 2, Mayor Max Bacon was told this policy does not change the current policy, but it would hold employees accountable to following the procedures and process.

Also, Bacon asked if this policy would prohibit the Police Department from holding a news conference and was told it would not.

Community Relations Director Jennifer Bennett said the policy provided precautionary information to city employees, outlined prohibitions on the use and content of social media and networking sites and provided rules and protocol direction for established and future social media use of the city.
