The Smyrna City Council has come out in opposition to two pieces of legislation that would curtail local governments’ ability to regulate the design of residential structures.
The Council at its March 4 meeting passed a resolution opposing House Bill 302 and Senate Bill 172, which would prevent local governments from adopting rules limiting the building design elements for one- or two-family dwellings.
Those elements are referred to as the building’s exterior color, style or material of roof or porch structures, location or styling of windows and doors, interior layout of rooms, and the style of external cladding materials.
The proposed bills are pending in the Georgia General Assembly as Crossover Day, March 7, looms on the horizon.
Smyrna joins a slew of other local governments that have formally lined up against the bills.
In its resolution, the City Council states the proposed laws would “negatively impact quality-of-life issues, including economic growth and the safety and welfare of Georgia citizens.”
