Last month, one Cobb County officer achieved quite the milestone.

Major Joseph Bennett, a Smyrna police officer, graduated from Harvard University Kennedy School of Government senior executives in state and local government program in June.

Bennett was one of a handful of law enforcement officers admitted to the highly competitive program. The Harvard program selected 59 students out of 1,000 applicants, according to the release.

The Smyrna Police Department said they are proud of the officer's accomplishments, and want to use his experience to "tackling complex issue[s] between the community and its police department."

Bennett described the experience, which included real world case studies and lectures by some of the nation's leading critical thinkers, as "unique."

"It was also enlightening to be able to exchange ideas with individuals from as far away as Ireland, Denmark, and Australia," he said in the release.

The Smyrna officer is also a graduate of the FBI National Academy and has earned a master's degree in public administration.
