During his State of the City address recently, Smyrna Mayor Max Bacon declined to say whether he would seek another term in office.

“I don’t know about running again. A lame-duck mayor is so ineffective,” Bacon cited as his reason for refusing to announce a decision.

Since 1985, Bacon has served as the city’s mayor continuously, following his late father Arthur T. Bacon who served as mayor from 1979 to 1984.

Bacon explained his health challenges since December when he experienced two heart attacks. In January, two stents opened the nearly total blockage, he said. Though he has missed a few meetings this year, Bacon showed no lack of stamina or characteristic humor in delivering his speech, receiving two standing ovations.
