The Cobb County Board of Commissioners voted on Dec. 16 to name the East Cobb Senior Center after late Cobb Chairman Tim Lee.

Lee’s family members were in attendance to receive a proclamation at the BOC meeting to posthumously honor the late chairman.

The center will be named the Tim D. Lee Senior Center.

“Tim was a passionate advocate for seniors throughout his tenure at the county,” said District 3 Commissioner JoAnn Birrell. “He enjoyed the activities at the East Cobb Senior Center and, as their caregiver, would often accompany his parents. Prior to serving as the chairman, Tim was the District 3 Commissioner. It is only fitting to rename the East Cobb Senior Center to the Tim D. Lee Senior Center in his honor.”

Lee began his entry into public service as the president of his subdivision’s HOA, according to a county statement.

From there, he served as president of the Northeast Cobb Homeowners Group, a director for the East Cobb Civic Association (ECCA) and a board member of the Cobb County Civic Coalition (CCCC).

In November 2002, Lee was elected as Cobb’s District 3 Commissioner.

From the beginning of his first term until his service as Cobb’s chairman, Lee became certified by the Association County Commissioners of Georgia (ACCG)/The University of Georgia and graduated from the 2004 Cobb Chamber of Commerce’s Leadership Cobb and Honorary Commander programs and the 2004 Atlanta Regional Commission’s (ARC) Regional Leadership Institute.

Lee also served on the boards of the Center for Children & Young Adults (CCYA), the North Georgia State Fair, the Cobb Symphony Orchestra, MUST Ministries, ACCG’s Local Economic Development & Community Development Committee, ARC’s Environmental Land Use Committee and the North Central Georgia Law Enforcement Academy.

In July 2010, Lee was elected chairman of the Board of Commissioners.

In 2012, he received the Mack Henderson Public Service Award and, in 2013, The Marietta Daily Journal Cobb County Citizen of the Year Award.

As chairman, Lee worked with the board to tackle the Great Recession and transportation issues throughout the county, according to the county statement.

He spearheaded the economic development program that resulted in an international airport in Cobb and the Atlanta Braves relocating to Cobb, the statement added.

Lee worked more than 30 years in advertising and marketing for Freebairn & Co. and in his own firm, Summit View Marketing, Inc.

A member of the Marietta Kiwanis Club, he attended Marietta First United Methodist Church.

After Lee’s election loss in 2016, he and his wife Annette moved to Habersham County.

He passed away on Sept. 29 from cancer.

Lee is survived by his wife Annette, their three children and six grandchildren.
