Scattered strong thunderstorms are forecast for metro Atlanta just in time for Wednesday’s afternoon commute, and forecasters warned that those storms could turn severe across the northwest corner of the state.

The National Weather Service said there is slight risk of severe weather, particularly damaging straight-line wind gusts to 60 mph and hail up to an inch in diameter, from Atlanta’s northwest suburbs northward.

Most of the storms will move in between 2 and 10 p.m., the Weather Service said.

At 6 a.m. Wednesday, Weather Service radar showed one line of storms moving eastward through northeast Alabama, while a second, larger area of storms was lined up along the Alabama-Mississippi state line.

Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Karen Minton said the chance of rain Wednesday is 40 percent, diminishing to 30 percent Thursday with sunny skies returning on Friday.

Highs will be in the mid-80s Wednesday and Thursday, cooling to the mid-70s Friday. Lows will be in the 60s.

Memorial Day weekend should be sunny and dry, with highs in the upper 70s Saturday and Sunday and low 80s Monday, and lows in the 50s.
