State Department of Transportation road crews were out around daybreak Wednesday treating icy patches on numerous roads across metro Atlanta and north Georgia as temperatures dropped well below the freezing mark.
Low temperatures ranged from 24 degrees in Dunwoody, Alpharetta and Dallas to 29 at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.
I-285 eastbound at Peachtree Industrial Boulevard and U.S. 78 near Mountain Industrial Boulevard in DeKalb County were among the trouble spots reported by the DOT.
Icing was also reported on Ga. 138 near Spivey Road in Henry County, on Ga. 3 near Red Top Mountain Road and on Ga. 20 near I-75 in Bartow County, on Ga. 141 at Laurel Springs Parkway in Forsyth County, on Ga. 53 at McEver Road in Hall County and Ga. 6 at Hutto Road in Polk County.
There was also icing reported by the DOT in Walker, Catoosa and Troup counties.
The DOT reminded homeowners and businesses to turn off sprinkler systems with automatic timers set to run overnight when temperatures are expected to dip below freezing.
“Every winter we have icing issues due to sprinkler systems left on overnight,” the DOT said in a statement. “They can create a very hazardous condition for motorists the next morning.”
Channel 2 meteorologist Karen Minton said the mercury will dip back to around 30 degrees early Thursday after warming to around 55 Wednesday afternoon.
Highs will be in the upper 40s Thursday and low 50s Friday, with lows early Friday in the upper 20s, Minton said, adding that sunny skies are forecast through Friday.
There’s a 90 percent chance of rain Saturday, along with highs in the low 50s and lows in the low 40s.
The chance of rain drops to 20 percent Sunday, when afternoon temperatures in the upper 40s will follow morning lows in the low 40s.
