Sandy Springs may amend its False Alarm Ordinance to shift the responsibility for registering alarm systems from homeowners to the alarm companies that service their homes.

The current ordinance levies a $100 fine against a homeowner who fails to register any monitored property alarm system with the city. A proposed change would fine an alarm company $500 for failure to register, among other violations. The City Council is expected to consider the change May 16.

According to city ordinance, a homeowner is not charged for the first and second police false alarms, but must pay a $50 fine for the third through fifth false alarm. The fine then escalates in increments and tops out at $500. Fines for fire false alarms are $250 for the second through ninth incidents and $500 for 10 or more incidents.

Proposed changes also would impose fines on alarm companies of $250 for the second and third police or fire false alarm, and $500 for four or more such incidents
