A man who held Sandy Springs police and SWAT officers at bay for several hours was taken into custody early Thursday.

Sandy Springs police Sgt. Ron Momon said the incident began around 10 p.m. Wednesday when Edward Quenzer’s mother told officers that her son had “threatened her with a Taser-type stun gun after she contacted police regarding his irrational behavior.”

The woman told officers that Quenzer had been displaying symptoms of schizophrenia and paranoia, Momon said.

He said police evacuated surrounding residents on Old Woodbine Road and began negotiating with Quenzer.

Before 5 a.m. Thursday, North Metro SWAT officers made entry into the home and were able to take Quenzer into custody without further incident, according to Momon.

Quenzer was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital for a mental evaluation.
