Sandy Springs officials will look to fill a vacancy in the city council ranks, following the resignation of District 3 member Graham McDonald to seek state office.

McDonald qualified last week to run for the Georgia House District 52 seat in the May 24 primary. He’ll square off against fellow Republicans Deborah Silcox and incumbent Joe Wilkinson.

City Council is expected to pass a resolution at its April 5 meeting authorizing a special election to fill the seat, said city spokeswoman Sharon Kraun. She added that the City Code calls for a special election if more than 12 months are left in an unexpired term.

McDonald is a Sandy Springs attorney and had served on the council since Jan. 2014.
