The Sandy Springs City Council approved paying $1.2 million for the former Enterprise car rental land downtown as the site of a temporary firehouse while a new Fire Station 2 is built nearby. The city also announced details of the new firefighting facility.

The land purchase involves a 0.3-acre tract at 6189 Roswell Road, opposite City Hall and the City Springs development. A building on the land will be renovated to house one fire truck, and a modular structure will be placed at the rear to house personnel.

The temporary firehouse is expected to open in March and will serve until the new Station 2 is finished in spring 2021, Fire Chief Keith Sanders told council members.

The new station will be a two-story, 20,000-square-foot structure on the same site as the building it replaces, at Johnson Ferry Road and Sandy Springs Circle. It will have private sleeping areas and a decontamination area with airlock, training stairway with rappelling wall and confined-space simulator, and 1,000-square-foot gym.
