The Sandy Springs City Council has approved paying $500,000 for a house and its lot at 640 Hammond Drive, the 24th property acquired by the city for the Hammond Drive widening project.

The house dates to the 1950s and sits on a 24,500-square-foot parcel, staff said in a report to the council. The seller is Jefflyne Saunders Potter, executor of the estate of William Frank Saunders, according to the purchase agreement.

In an unrelated real estate transaction, the council approved paying $35,600 for 889.78 square feet of fee simple right of way and 457.1 square feet of temporary construction easement for three years at 5090 Spalding Drive. The land is needed for the Spalding Drive Sidewalk Project, from Winters Chapel to Holcomb Bridge roads, staff said.

The city had offered $12,600, but the property’s owner, Daniel DeFrancis, countered with $35,600. The owner said the project would force him to replace 13 trees, including three recently planted cypresses, staff said.
