The Sandy Springs City Council has approved the $385,000 purchase of a single-family home and its land at 390 Hammond Drive, the 25th property acquired to date for a future widening of the street.

The residence dates to the 1950s and sits on a roughly 19,800-square-foot lot. City staff negotiated the purchase of the property from Shuisheng Xu and Volien Voong, according to the sales contract.

William H. “Marty” Martin Jr., director of public works for Sandy Springs, told the council that the house “does not look to be in good condition or a good candidate for future rentals, based on the initial staff assessment.” Martin referred to a city program to rent homes it acquires to city employees until the time comes to raze the residences.

Plans call for widening Hammond from two lanes to four, creating a divided thoroughfare with sidewalks and bicycle lanes.
