Sandy Springs has moved forward on a contract valued at $878,050 to construct the proposed Denmark Drive, a connector between Boylston Drive and Roswell Road in the downtown area.

CMES Inc. submitted the lowest bid of eight for the work, according to a staff report. The City Council approved the contract award, pending approval of the Legal and Finance departments.

The contractor will be responsible for site grading, erosion control and installing the roadway, curbs and gutter, sidewalks, retaining walls and pedestrian-scale lighting and landscaping.

The street would be named for Dr. Leila Daughtry Denmark, a local pediatrician who was the world's oldest practicing physician when she retired in 103, and who died in 2012 at the age of 114. According to a family website, Dr. Denmark had a role in developing a vaccine for pertussis (whooping cough) and wrote a book on childrearing, "Every Child Should Have a Chance."
