Forecasters said Friday that Hurricane Sandy will have little impact on Atlanta’s weather this weekend as the storm churns northward past the Georgia coast.
With the storm expected to stay well offshore, “the most we will see is increased winds and maybe a few showers as it passes to our east,” the National Weather Service said in a statement Friday.
A cold front approaching from the west, however, will bring “a sharp drop in temperatures” to metro Atlanta by the end of the weekend and early next week, Channel 2 Action News meteorologist Brad Nitz said.
After topping out in the upper 70s on Friday, afternoon highs will be in the upper 60s Saturday and low 60s Sunday, then climb to only around 57 degrees Monday and Tuesday, Nitz predicted.
Morning lows are expected to be in the upper 50s Saturday, upper 40s Sunday, upper 30s Monday and mid-30s Tuesday.
While the hurricane is not expected to impact metro Atlanta’s weather, it could cause very windy conditions in Jacksonville, Fla., where the Georgia Bulldogs take on the Florida Gators Saturday afternoon.
Football fans headed south for that game can expect road construction to block lanes along I-75 in both directions in Bibb, Houston and Dooly counties, according to the state Department of Transportation.
Weekend construction projects in metro Atlanta include the ongoing resurfacing project on the top-end Perimeter, where motorists can expect delays in either direction anywhere between Cobb Parkway and Ashford Dunwoody Road.
Delays are also expected on Ga. 400 north and southbound near McFarland Parkway, where at least one lane in each direction will be blocked all weekend. Closer to town, one lane of Ga. 400 in each lane will be blocked near Lenox Road.
Weekend events scheduled include Saturday’s Bands of America regional high school marching band championships at the Georgia Dome beginning at 7:30 a.m., the Georgia Tech-Brigham Young football game at 3 p.m. Saturday at Bobby Dodd Stadium and the Atlanta Marathon, which begins at 7 a.m. Sunday at Atlantic Station.
