A May 26 ceremony will mark the reopening of a Lake Lanier-area road segment shut down by a neighborhood dam failure three years ago.
A half-mile stretch of Sanders Road between Buford Dam and Lake Mary Alice Park roads has been closed to all but local traffic since just after Memorial Day, 2013, when a culvert collapsed.
Cumming Planning and Zoning Director Scott Morgan said after delays including high lake levels and culvert-manufacturing issues the work is done and finishing touches are being added. The city of Cumming and Forsyth County jointly funded the $434,000 repair because the stretch of road lies within both the city and county.
Morgan said the 10 a.m. May 26 event at the repair site will bring together city, county and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officials. He said they wanted to get the road open before Memorial Day because many have historically used it to access parks in the area.
