Roundabout project set in Dawson

A busy Dawson County intersection will get a makeover.

The Georgia Department of Transportation has awarded a nearly $4 million contract to CMES Incorporated of Norcross to build a roundabout at the intersection of Ga. 53 at Ga. 183 near Dawsonville. The project will change the traditional intersection to a three-legged one-lane roundabout. The approaches will be set up as 12 to 20-foot-wide lanes with a raised island to split traffic.

GDOT says the roundabout will improve both traffic flow and safety-for example, they say, there were 23 crashes at that junction between 2004 and 2008.
