The Roswell City Council has approved seeking a federal grant of up to $70,000 to buy explosives detection training aids and equipment for city K9 teams so they can better detect potential threats at special events.

The 2019 Homeland Security Grant will be sought from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA), staff said in a report to the council.

Roswell K9 terms currently serve with a larger GEMA K9 Task Force, providing explosives detection support at large special events in metro Atlanta and around the state, staff said. The GEMA team, in turn, supports the city at special events.

The Roswell Police Department will be responsible for implementing, managing, reporting and closing out the grant project, according to a resolution approved by the council. No matching funds from the city are required.
