Declaring that “smoking, vaping and the use of other nicotine products by underage persons is a direct danger to health and causes long-term addiction,” a proposed Roswell city ordinance would require tobacco and vaping retailers to seek proof of a purchaser’s age.

To prevent sales to persons under the age of 18, the ordinance says, sellers of “cigarettes, tobacco products, tobacco-related objects, alternative nicotine products including ‘Juul’ and similar products, and/or vaping products” would be required to ask for legal identification showing the customer’s age.

The measure recently had a first reading before the City Council. It is to return the council for a second vote on Jan. 14.

The National Institutes of Health issued a report Monday, Dec. 17, saying the number of teenagers using electronic cigarettes has hit an all-time high, with one of five high school seniors saying they've vaped in the past month, and 37.3 percent, in the past 12 months.
