Roswell's newest playground takes climbable equipment for kids beyond just slides and monkey bars.

The city will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Sweet Apple Elementary Community Playground on Friday at 9 a.m.

The $160,000 new playground features the first gravity rail component in the Southeast (similar to a zip line) and a generation swing, on which an adult and child can both sit and face each other while swinging, according to the Roswell's website.

The playground, accessible from Sweet Apple Park at 11850 Crabapple Road, opened about two weeks ago. It will be closed to the public during Sweet Apple Elementary's school hours, as part of a joint use agreement between Roswell and Fulton County Schools.

The new playground will be an added attraction for parents and students in the area. It's near Sweet Apple Village, which hosts a seasonal farmers market; as well as the shopping center — which, along with the school — is a viewing spot for Roswell's 4th of July fireworks.

The school’s original playground dated back to 2001 and was replaced as part of the city’s Recreation, Parks, Historic and Cultural Affairs Department’s Playground Replacement Program.

Sweet Apple Elementary has been ranked as one of metro Atlanta's best schools.
