Tired of people dressed up like the Statue of Liberty or the “Pizza Pizza” guy allegedly getting too close to traffic and distracting drivers, the Roswell City Council has ordered “human signs” to stay at least 10 feet off the road.

Prior ordinance language said human signs – people who hold signs, dance and do whatever else it takes to draw attention to a business – must stay off the public right-of-way. But officials said “public right of way” was subject to interpretation.

Now, the law will say no human sign can be closer than 10 feet behind the edge of the pavement or back of the curb.

At a Planning Commission meeting in May, officials singled out costumed sign holders for Liberty Tax and Little Caesars Pizza for criticism. The Council approved the measure Monday as a text amendment to the Unified Development Code.
