The Roswell City Council has approved a voluntary program that sets physical fitness goals for police and offers monetary incentives to stay in shape.

The Police Department Physical Fitness Incentive program offers a minimum annual incentive of $100 and a maximum of $200, depending on the goals achieved. Officers must qualify annually to continue receiving the incentive. Assessments will be conducted at least four times a year.

The standards to meet are those of the Cooper Institute in Dallas, Texas, which develops fitness programs for law enforcement and public safety personnel, according to a policy summary. Officers will be evaluated in four events: vertical jump, sit-ups, push-ups and 300-meter run. Events are broken down by gender and age groups.

The maximum annual cost of the program to the city is estimated to be $34,400, based on 172 eligible sworn and detention officers receiving the maximum $200 incentive.
