Roswell has agreed to participate in the reestablished Georgia Urban County Consortium so that it can have access to an estimated $100,000 a year in federal grants that can be used to construct or rehab affordable housing.

The City Council recently approved a resolution to participate in the consortium, which is being led by the Cobb County Community Development Block Grant Office, according to a staff report to the council.

“The reformation of the consortium will give Roswell access to HOME Investment Partnership funds through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development,” staff said.

The HOME program provides grants that communities, partnered with local nonprofits, can use to build, buy and/or rehabilitate affordable housing for rent or homeownership or provide direct rental assistance to low-income persons, according to a HUD website.

The consortium agreement runs from 2018 to 2020, and Roswell will be required to provide local cash or in-kind matching funds equal to 25 percent of project costs, according to the resolution. The match would be fulfilled by grant subrecipients or through the Grant Match Fund Contingency.
