Most brides worry about it raining on their special day, but in the case of Melissa De Feis, Hurricane Hermine may have her moving her wedding date a second time.
“People are telling me if it rains on your wedding day, it’s good luck,” De Feis told Channel 2 Action News, “So, if it’s a monsoon that must be really good luck.”
De Feis and her fiancé, Spencer Lentz, postponed their destination wedding in Destin, Florida, a year ago after she became pregnant, she told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Originally scheduled for late August 2015, the hotel let the couple move their date to the Saturday during Labor Day weekend.
Everything seemed to be going as planned until De Feis got a call from her friend saying Walton County – where Destin is located – was under mandatory evacuation due to the hurricane.
“I heard nothing about this,” De Feis said. She emailed her wedding coordinator, who said the evacuation could be lifted but didn’t know when.
According to a post on the Walton County Emergency Management Facebook page, a tropical storm warning and hurricane watch were lifted for the county about 2 p.m., but it will operate under a local state of emergency in response to potential damaged caused by the hurricane.
De Feis and Lentz left their Roswell home about 6:30 a.m. and were two hours into their drive, had turned around to head home. Then their wedding coordinator emailed them the all clear.
“What was supposed to be a six-hour ride, turned into a 10-hour one,” she said.
But De Feis isn’t complaining. The couple’s wedding is still scheduled to take place.
“Honestly, the weather’s not too bad,” she said. “There are people on hot tubs and at the beach.”
