Roswell breaking ground on new fire station

FIREHOUSE FOR SALE--November 7, 2013 Atlanta: Engine 13 leaves the house on Thursday, Nov. 7, 2013 as the old firehouse (background) is now for up for sale. The City of Atlanta this week began accepting bids on the Flat Shoals Avenue building that housed the firefighters of Station 13 for nearly 90 years. The 2148-square-foot fire house opened in 1921 on just under a quarter-acre of land in the 400 block of Flat Shoals Avenue in southeast Atlanta. It's been vacant since a new Station 13 was built across Metropolitan Avenue in 2010, according to Mark Haldane, real estate asset manager for the city. Bids, which must include a certified check or surety bond for 10 percent of the bid price, will be accepted through Dec. 20, Haldane told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Potential bidders can inspect the property from 1 to 5 p.m. on Nov. 20, he said. The building is being sold as is, and if you've always dreamed of having a fire pole to slide down after getting out of bed every morning, you're out of luck, because the station is a single-story building. City of Roswell officials will break ground on a new fire station at 2 p.m. Friday at the station’s planned location at the intersection of Old Alabama Road and Market Place Boulevard.
The new 15,000-square-foot Fire Station 4 will replace the current location on Holcomb Bridge Road. The building’s design is being finalized, and will include enhancements such as drive-through bays for fire trucks stationed there as opposed to the current back-in bays. Construction is set to be complete by December 2016.
Spokeswoman Carisa Turner said the station’s designed with future expansion needs in mind, but crew sizes will stay the same for the moment.
