Roswell has set a formal groundbreaking for the late morning of March 1 to begin work on the fifth and final phase of the Riverwalk, a multi-purpose greenway along the Chattahoochee River.

The ceremony is to start at 11:30 a.m. near the Chattahoochee Nature Center, 9135 Willeo Road.

The project dates to 2000, when Roswell residents approved a bond referendum that included funds to construct a seven-mile greenway along the river, incorporating parks, trails and other recreational and educational facilities.

Since then, the city has completed four phases through Don White Park, Riverside Park and Azalea Park to Willeo Road. The final phase will extend the Riverwalk to the Gold Branch Unit of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area in Cobb County.

The Roswell City Council last fall approved a $1.9 million contract to Integrated Inc. to complete the trail. The city has been working with Cobb on a bridge connecting the Riverwalk to the Lower Roswell Road Trail.
