Skateboarders in Riverdale had been seeking a place to hone their craft for a several years. Then in September the Riverdale City Council approved a contract with Spohn Ranch Inc. of Los Angeles to build a skate park located at the city’s new recreation complex on Wilson Road.
City officials recently broke ground on the new home for Clayton County skateboard enthusiasts.
The skate park sits on a 9,600-square-foot plot of land behind the softball field at 904 Wilson Road, Riverdale. The skatepark includes lighting, benches, trash containers and a drinking fountain.
A design workshop allowed local skateboarders to provide input on the types of elements and style of park they hoped to see. With their input, the final skatepark design is 6,000 square feet of concrete featuring a beginner to intermediate bowl, modern street elements and key peripheral amenities including spectator seating, a shade structure and a drinking fountain.
