A Gwinnett County Greek restaurant that failed two health inspections in less than a year has a new general manager and now a new nearly perfect score.

Greek Island Grille on Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road opened last summer to welcoming customers. Channel 2 Action News reported last August that a month after the restaurant in Suwanee opened, it failed a health inspection with a 50. Then after several good scores, they failed again this month with a 60.

The Gwinnett County health inspector gave Greek Island Grill the 60 on May 13th. Three days later, on a re-inspection, they got a 99.

The new general manager, Shawn Merchant, told Channel 2's Carol Sbarge the staff is phenomenal, they listen and are willing to do the right thing. Merchant started in March, and he says he’s making sure good practices are in place. He says workers know their position and responsibilities in the restaurant. Merchant emphasizes there is a focus on cleaning and staying on top of things.

Some violations on May 13 included the inspector observing an employee touch hair and face and then touching mustard and mixing salad dressing without washing hands. Also the inspector noted cold-held food wasn’t held cold enough. Merchant says the violations were corrected immediately and led to the score of 99, a score he is determined to maintain.
